Maxine HarrawayAgeing signs The passing of time has left its mark on the earth below us. If we look carefully we can see the signs and imagine the historical scenes that have created the lines and contours of earth's crust. Battles between man, or beast have left blood and bones trodden into the land. The weight of passing carts or trucks, and continual journeying to and fro have created the present day scars and wrinkles on its surface. The different weather conditions, the ever changing flora and fauna, they have all played their part in sculpturing patterns and lines into the surface below our feet.
Whether standing on a hillside observing the surrounding scenery, or sitting on a rock staring at the patterns on the ground, I am mesmerised by the thought that man and time has played such an important role in transforming nature in this way and I realise the great responsibility we have towards our planet.
By adding further lines to my images - sometimes subtle yet sometimes harsh - I want to emphasize the risk of destruction that man may cause, and that this destruction may not always be clearly visible to the eye, and at times we may, in fact delude ourselves into thinking that we are creating these marks for the sake of progress.
