"The human mind has no logical answer to questions about our own existence. Have we not always looked into nature in order to discover something about ourselves? Work with living plants is both an intimate and a visionary endeavour" Barbara Nemitz

In recent work I chose to play on the notions of reality and illusion and the connection between everyday objects and materials viewed from an unfamiliar viewpoint. In Lightwall with Flowers, Bottles, and Waste Materials (2006) I built a wall-like structure into which three windows were cut. These open spaces were replaced with tracing paper. Inside the wall I placed seven Perspex shelves upon which I placed glass bottles containing flowers. Behind the bottles were fluorescent light tubes, which projected the silhouette of the flowers inside the bottles through the tracing paper across the surface of the wall. The flowers, which were living at first, decayed over the duration of the show. When the viewer approaches the work from the side the artifice and illusion of the work is laid bare as its construction is evident with left over materials and the detritus of the building work scattered on the floor inside the cavity wall space..
My work is both concealing and revealing. By obscuring the objects, plants and flowers behind screens of tracing paper, a beautiful, dream-like-image is created. The objects and materials collected during the making of my installations also become part of the work reflecting its formation in reality.
